How We Calculate the Number of Wildflowers in The Billion Wildflower Mission
The Billion Wildflower Mission is all about turning small actions into a global impact. Every pledge to join our mission helps us collectively move closer to our goal of growing one billion wildflowers, restoring biodiversity and bringing colour and life back to our planet.
But you might be wondering, how do we actually measure the number of wildflowers pledged?
The Science Behind the Numbers
To make our mission measurable, we needed a clear and credible way to estimate how many wildflowers are planted for every square metre pledged. After researching guidance from leading UK wildflower experts, we found that most wildflower seed mixes are sown at around 1–4 grams per square metre.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), this sowing rate typically equates to 1,000 to 4,000 seeds per square metre, depending on the species and seed mix used. Similarly, Wildflower Turf Ltd and Emorsgate Seeds, two of the UK’s most wellknown wildflower suppliers, recommend similar densities for creating healthy, balanced meadows.
Based on this data, we’ve chosen a simple, transparent average for our calculations based on the lowest figure:
1 square metre = 1,000 wildflower seeds.
Estimates suggest 300 - 700 wildflower plants will grow from 1000 seeds therefore again we have chosen the lowest figure of 300.
1 square meter = 300 wildflowers over a year (conservative estimate!)
This figure allows us to track progress towards our one billion wildflower target in a way that’s both realistic and easy to understand.
Why We Use an Average
Every wildflower mix is unique and the number of seeds can vary depending on the species, seed size, and growing conditions. Using an average helps us create a consistent, fair way to measure pledges across different regions and planting styles.
It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. By using a clear and transparent formula, we can celebrate every contribution and show the collective impact of our mission supporters in a measurable way.
A Mission That’s Measurable and Meaningful
Our goal isn’t just symbolic. It’s quantifiable. Every pledge, no matter how small, adds up to something extraordinary. When you pledge just one square metre, you’re helping to grow approximately 300 wildflowers. A tangible step towards restoring biodiversity and supporting pollinators.
Together, we’re proving that when people unite around a shared purpose, we can create measurable change for the planet.
A Billion Wildflowers for a Blooming Planet
Our goal of one billion wildflowers would form a 500 kilometre ribbon of colour, a living symbol of hope stretching across country borders and blooming for the planet. This global corridor of wildflowers will create vital feeding and nesting habitats for pollinators everywhere.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and Buglife, each wildflower meadow can support dozens of bee species and hundreds of pollinators, making them one of the most important habitats for biodiversity. Every square metre pledged helps restore these vital ecosystems, connecting landscapes and lives across the world.
Together, we’re not just planting wildflowers. We are planting the seeds of a healthier, more vibrant planet.
